Turkey and Swiss Sliders

Hot Turkey and Swiss sliders on Hawaiian Rolls. These make a great lunch, dinner, snack, or even appetizers for a party.

There is a reason these little sandwiches show up at parties, potlucks, game days, and easy weeknight dinners. They are warm, cheesy, buttery, and easy to grab with one hand while you are chatting, cheering, or chasing everyone back to the table. Hawaiian rolls bring a soft, slightly sweet bite that works so well with savory turkey and melty Swiss. Add a seasoned butter topping and you have the kind of simple recipe people come back for before the pan has even cooled.

These hot turkey and Swiss sliders are also a great way to use deli turkey, leftover holiday turkey, or whatever sliced turkey you already have in the refrigerator. Serve them as a main dish with chips and pickles, cut them apart for appetizers, or wrap a few for lunch the next day. They are casual, cozy, and just fancy enough to feel like you did more than stack meat and cheese on bread.

What is a turkey slider?

Layers of turkey and cheese on rolls instead of buns or bread. These are like mini sandwiches.

The best part about sliders is the size. They are smaller than a regular sandwich, but big on flavor. Because they bake together in one dish, the cheese melts into the turkey, the rolls toast on top, and the bottoms soak up just enough buttery goodness without falling apart.

What cheese goes with turkey?

In case you don’t like the swiss on the turkey and swiss slider, turkey pairs well with gouda, brie, havartis, muenster, provolone, mozzarella and cheddar.

Swiss is a classic because it melts smoothly and has a mild, nutty flavor that does not overpower the turkey. Provolone is another easy choice if you want something extra melty, while cheddar gives the sliders a sharper bite. Brie makes them feel a little more holiday-ish, and gouda adds a smoky, creamy flavor that works especially well if you are serving these for dinner.

Fun facts about sliders

  • Sliders are named for their small size and easy-to-hold shape. They are made for snacking, sharing, and going back for “just one more.”
  • Hawaiian rolls are slightly sweet, which is why they balance salty deli meats, buttery toppings, and tangy mustard so well.
  • Turkey and Swiss is a classic pairing because the cheese melts gently and adds richness without hiding the flavor of the turkey.
  • Baked sliders are a host’s best friend because one pan can feed several people with very little effort.

Tips and tricks for the best turkey and Swiss sliders

  • Slice the rolls as one big slab instead of pulling them apart first. It makes layering faster and keeps the sandwiches even.
  • Use thin slices of turkey so each bite is tender and easy to pull apart.
  • Layer cheese on the bottom and top of the turkey if you want extra “glue” to hold everything together.
  • Cover the dish with foil for the first part of baking so the cheese melts before the tops brown too much.
  • Brush the butter mixture all the way to the edges of the rolls. Those corner pieces deserve flavor too.
  • Let the sliders rest for a few minutes after baking. The cheese sets slightly and they are easier to cut and serve.

How do you heat sliders?

See the recipe on how to bake the turkey and swiss sliders. To reheat the sliders, bake in a preheated oven on 350° on a baking sheet for about 10-12 minutes. If you want a quicker reheat, try broiling them for 2-3 minutes. Just make sure the middle is heated through. You can also reheat in the microwave by wrapping one in a paper towel and cook on high for 20-30 seconds.

Serving suggestions

For lunch or dinner, serve these turkey and Swiss sliders with potato chips, pasta salad, coleslaw, fruit salad, pickles, or a simple green salad. For a party tray, cut the sliders apart and pile them on a platter with toothpicks, small bowls of mustard, ranch, honey mustard, or cranberry sauce for dipping. If you are making them for game day, add a side of fries, veggie sticks, or pretzels and call it done.

These are also good with soup. Tomato soup, potato soup, vegetable soup, broccoli cheese soup, or leftover turkey soup all make the meal feel extra cozy. If you want a holiday-style plate, serve the sliders with cranberry sauce, sweet potato fries, green beans, or a small scoop of stuffing on the side.

Storage tips

Store leftover sliders in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For best quality and food safety, refrigerate perishable leftovers within 2 hours and use cooked leftovers within 3 to 4 days. Reheat leftovers until they reach 165°F in the center. If you are reheating several sliders, place them in a baking dish, cover loosely with foil, and warm at 350° until heated through. For one slider, the microwave works in a pinch, but the oven keeps the bread from getting too soft.

To freeze, wrap the cooled sliders tightly and place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Thaw in the refrigerator when you are ready to eat, then reheat in the oven until hot. If you know you are making these ahead for a party, assemble them without baking, cover the dish, refrigerate, and bake when you are ready. Add a few extra minutes to the baking time if the pan is cold from the refrigerator.
