A great Ranch Snack Mix for your next party, game day table, road trip snack bag, or movie night bowl. This easy ranch snack mix is made with crispy Chex cereal, pretzel sticks, melted butter, and dry ranch seasoning for a salty, buttery, crunchy bite that disappears fast. It is simple enough for a last-minute snack, but it also works beautifully as a make-ahead party recipe because it keeps well when stored properly.

There is just something fun about a homemade snack mix. You get to toss together a few pantry favorites, add a big punch of ranch flavor, bake it until everything is coated and crisp, and then watch everyone come back for โjust one more handful.โ I like this recipe because it does not require a long ingredient list or fancy equipment. A baking dish, a mixing bowl, and a little stirring are all you need.
The dry ranch seasoning gives the mix that familiar tangy, herby flavor, while the butter helps the seasoning cling to every piece. Baking the mix also helps the cereal and pretzels toast lightly so the finished snack tastes more homemade and less like plain cereal in a bowl. Serve it warm right out of the oven if you cannot wait, or let it cool completely and store it for later snacking.
Fun facts about snack mix
- Homemade Chex party mix became popular in the 1950s, long before the bagged snack mix became a grocery store staple.
- Snack mix recipes are easy to customize because the cereal acts like a crunchy little sponge for butter, seasonings, and spices.
- Ranch seasoning is a favorite shortcut because it already includes a flavorful blend of herbs, garlic, onion, and tangy seasoning.
- This kind of mix is sometimes called โparty mixโ because it is easy to serve in big bowls and does not need forks, plates, or reheating.
Tips and tricks for the best Ranch Snack Mix
- Use a big bowl. The larger the bowl, the easier it is to toss everything without crushing the cereal.
- Melt the butter completely. Fully melted butter coats the cereal and pretzels more evenly.
- Sprinkle seasoning gradually. Add the ranch seasoning a little at a time while stirring so it does not clump in one spot.
- Do not rush the cooling time. Let the snack mix cool to room temperature before storing it so steam does not get trapped in the container.
- Customize the crunch. Swap in cheese crackers, oyster crackers, nuts, bagel chips, or extra pretzels if that is what you have on hand.
- Watch the butter. Too much butter can make the mix heavy or soft, so measure it instead of eyeballing.
Serving suggestions
Serve Ranch Snack Mix in a big bowl for parties, or scoop it into small cups for easy grab-and-go servings. It is great with sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, barbecue plates, game day appetizers, or a simple movie night spread. You can also package it in treat bags or mason jars for edible gifts, teacher treats, road trips, camping snacks, or holiday snack baskets.
For a party table, mix it with a few other finger foods so guests can build their own snack plate. Pair it with fresh veggies and dip, sliders, pinwheels, cheese cubes, fruit, or a creamy appetizer. If you want a little heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce to the butter before tossing, then bake as usual.

How long is homemade Chex mix good for?
If stored in an airtight baggie, or container, the ranch snack mix is good for 4-6 weeks.
Can Chex mix be frozen, or the Ranch Snack Mix?
Yes. Freeze in an airtight container for up to 4-6 months. Suggestion: donโt let the ranch snack mix thaw in the bag. Pour it out onto a baking sheet, paper towels, or in a bowl.
How do you make Chex mix not soggy?
If baking it, it shouldnโt be soggy unless you added too much butter. Before storing the Ranch Snack Mix, make sure it has cooled down to room temp. Putting it in a bag or container while still warm will cause moisture and it will get soggy.

Extra storage tips
- Cool the mix completely before sealing it in a bag or container.
- Use an airtight container, lidded jar, or resealable freezer bag.
- Keep it in a cool, dry place away from humidity and heat.
- If the mix softens, spread it on a baking sheet and warm it in a low oven for a few minutes, then cool again before storing.
- For gifting, package it the same day you plan to give it away so it tastes extra fresh.
