This Creamy Cheesy Rice is such an easy to make side dish. Goes great with so many foods. I had mine with one of my older recipes, Crispy Parmesan Crusted Turkey Strips, and it went well with it. Would also go great with steaks, most ground beef recipes and even Mexican, if you add some tomatoes and peppers to it.
This rice could be made in an Instant Pot, just like The Buttered Home does with her Instant Pot Rice Recipe. Or, similar, you could use a Rice Cooker. I wore my rice cooker out and then moved on to the Instant Pot.

Whatever your preference is, heck you could even make boil in bag rice. Just have some cooked rice ready.
What cheese goes with rice?
If you like it, then try it. Just think of the melting factor and the stringiness factor. You could also try different combinations of rice vs cheeses to have a variety of flavors.
I used mild cheddar cheese in mine with white rice.
How to make cheesy rice?
Start with cooked rice. Then I added the following….
- Sour Cream
- All purpose flour
- Cheddar Cheese
- Onion Powder
- Salt and Pepper, to taste
PS…this is for a large batch. Please change the serving size to match what you need.

Creamy Cheesy Rice
- 4 Cups White Rice, Cooked
- 1 Cup Butter
- 1 1/3 Cup Sour Cream
- 1 1/2 Tbsp All purpose Flour
- 2 Cups Cheddar Cheese, Shredded
- 1 Tsp Onion Powder Can sub garlic powder
- Salt and Pepper, to taste
- Green Onions, Chopped If desired, optional
- Place cooked rice in a large bowl.
- Stir in butter. Then stir in remaining ingredients. Let sit, covered, for 10 minutes. Remove cover, stir again.
- Garnish with Green Onions, if desired. Serve
