Tres Leches Kit Kat Cake

You’ve seen those awesome Kit Kat cakes out there on Pinterest, right? Well, me and my brilliant mind decided to make one of those, but using a Tres Leches Kit Kat cake. If you don’t know what a Tres Leches cake is….it’s a sponge cake—in some recipes, a butter cake—soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream.
Instead of making a from scratch Tres Leches cake though, I bought the box mix. But, if you’ve ever made one you’ll know that you soak it, like you would a poke cake. These types of cakes are typically made in a cake pan and left there.

Not so easy to frost
I thought maybe using my spring form pan, that I could remove the ring and place the Kit Kats around it. Well, it did work, to an extent. The problem I had was frosting the sides. The frosting was just sliding off. This made it pretty darn difficult to keep the Kit Kats on.
As you’ll see below, I had to tie the Kit Kats and put it back in the fridge to set the frosting. Pooh.

It still tastes amazing, it was just hard to make the presentation that I wanted. Next time I will use a regular cake mix so my frosting isn’t sliding all over the place.
Have you ever had a hard time with frosting staying on your cake? What did you do to fix it?

Tres Leches Kit Kat Cake
Equipment
- Springform Pan
- Stand Mixer/Hand Mixer
Ingredients
- 1 Box (14 oz) Duncan Hines Tres Leches Cake Mix
- 3 Eggs
- 1/2 Cup Water
- 3 1/2 Cups Milk
- 1 Box (3.3 oz) Instant Vanilla Pudding
- 1-2 Cans (16 oz) Duncan Hines Cream Cheese Frosting
- 23-24 Snack Size Kit Kat Bars
- Candy Sprinkles Optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine cake mix, eggs, vanilla pudding mix and water. Blend on low for 30 seconds. Then blend on high for 2 minutes.
- Pour cake batter into your spring form pan.
- Bake in preheated oven for 18-25 minutes. Or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack.
- Blend the tres leches packet (in cake box) and the milk using a whisk until completely dissolved. Poke holes in the cake using a fork.
- Pour the milk syrup over the cake slowly. You might not want to do as much as I did.
- Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. Remove from fridge after it has set.
- Remove outer ring. Frost top and sides of cake. This is where I had problems with the frosting sliding around.
- Unwrap and place Kit Kats around the outside of the cake. You will have to push them up against. Use baker’s twine to hold together. Fill in the top with more frosting to reach the top of the Kit Kats.
- Add sprinkles, if desired. Place back in refrigerator for at least 2 more hours to allow the frosting to set some.
- Remove twine and serve.
