If you know how to make a grilled cheese, then this is nothing more than adding some fried bologna on it. And, if you like varieties of grilled cheese, then you should check out my Grilled Tuna & Cheese. It was yummy too!!
What is a boloney (bologna) sandwich?
Just that. Bologna slices between slices of white bread, with some sort of condiment like miracle whip, mayonaisse, mustard or ketchup. This sandwich has fried bologna on a grilled cheese sandwich.
Is fried bologna bad for you?
Pretty much anything fried is not healthy. Won’t lie. You could always make this sandwich with regular bologna (not fried) and it would be better for you.
Is fried bologna a southern thing?
Southerners do love some fried bologna. However, it’s not just a southern thing. My Mom was from Ohio and she made it for me when I was a kid.
Fried bologna started in Italy though.

Fried Bologna Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 Slices Beef Bologna
- 2 Slices bread (your choice)
- 2 Slices American Cheese, or your choice
- 2 Tbsp Butter
- 2 Tbsp Mayo, or Miracle Whip
Instructions
- Cut the bologna in halves
- Place the bologna halves in a skillet on Medium to Medium High heat and cook till it starts to turn brown on the edges. Remove the bologna from pan when done. Place on a paper towel.
- Butter your bread on one side while the bologna is cooking. I used sourdough for me and whole grain white for my daughter.
- Place the bread butter side down in the skillet. Cook on medium – medium high heat. Add Mayo or Miracle Whip to the side up. Place one slice of cheese on bread. Place your fried bologna on top of the cheese. Use as many halves as you want. I usually go with 3-4.
- Place your 2nd piece of cheese on top of the fried bologna.
- Place your bread on top, butter side up.
- You're sandwich is probably ready to flip now. Cook each side until it's the way you like it.
Can I use regular bologna?
Yes…you can use whatever type of bologna you prefer!

Have a great day!
I’m from Pa. I grew up eating fried Bologna. We ate it on toasted sandwiches or just plain bread. With or without cheese. My dad never cut the slices in half though. He kept them whole and cut 5 slices in from the sides about a inch in at like 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 o’clock.. That way when the bologna fried it layed flat in the pan instead of bubbling in the center.
Huh…I only fry my ham for my omelets…now you got me thinking 😉 Thanks for stopping by and checkin it out!!

Have a great day!
That’s funny, I always thought fried Bologna sandwiches were a southern thing because I grew eating them in TN and when I moved north no one I knew had ever had one. Guess we’re just lucky that we had parents/grandparents that made them for us, whereever they came from! 🙂
