How do you make Pepper Steak from scratch?
This is such an easy recipe to make and it’s homemade. You know exactly what is in it. You know exactly what you and your family are eating.
Check the recipe below to find out how to make it from scratch. You can always add or remove ingredients. The Chinese-American way to make it adds soy sauce and ginger. If you want that flavor, then add it by all means.
How do you cook a steak without it getting tough?
There are several things to do to make your steak tender. Try some of these…
- Use a meat mallet to tenderize the meat prior to cooking it.
- Marinade the meat in something like Worchestershire/Soy Sauce prior to cooking.
- Salt
- Let the meat come to room temperature before cooking.
- Rest the meat after cooking.
- Make sure you are cooking it long enough.
Can Pepper Steak be frozen?
Absolutely. After cooking it, let it cool. Then place in a sealed tight container/bag. Place in freezer. Will last up to 4 months in the freezer. I would not freeze the rice with it though. Rice can dry out when you freeze it.
To Reheat: You can reheat in the microwave, but if using high heat, thaw first and only heat 30 seconds at a time. A microwave can dry the meat out quickly. For stove top reheating – thaw first, then reheat on medium heat for about 10 minutes, give or take.
Is Pepper Steak spicy?
No. It is only spicy if you add something spicy to it.

Pepper Steak
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Butter
- 1 Green Pepper, cut
- 1/2 Onion, cut
- 2 cans Stewed Tomatoes
- 2 lbs Sirlion Steak, Thin, sliced
- 1 tbsp Worchestershire Sauce
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cut Green Peppers as shown. 2″ slices.

- Slice then cut onions. Slice the half onion and then cut the slices in half, as shown.

- Add the butter to a skillet and turn on medium heat. Once the butter melts, add the bell pepper and onions. Cook until the bell pepper and onion soften but not limp. Remove the pepper and onion and set aside for now.

- Cut the sirloin in strips (doesn't have to be perfect). Season the meat with salt and pepper. Brown in the same skillet that you cooked the bell pepper and onion in (keep that flavor going). **Using a meat mallet will create more tender cuts of the steak** NOTE: I have updated the recipe to call for strips and not "cubes", but you can do it either way.

- Combine the browned meat, bell pepper, onion and the stewed tomatoes in the same skillet or move to a deeper pot, like I did. Add 1 tbsp of worchestershire sauce and a little more pepper to taste. Bring to a boil and then turn the heat to low and simmer for 2-3 hours. Let it all the flavors combine.
